In a world that's been a global pandemic for so long, it feels like one of those “free” moments where you get a free pass for something you never thought you'd ever get.
But there's more to this than meets the eye. A new study from the University of Toronto finds that the popular over-the-counter (OTC) drug Nexium is better than the generic version, Prilosec, at a comparable cost.
The researchers, led by Prof. Peter D. Koeppe, from the University of Toronto, are comparing prices and effectiveness of three of the most commonly prescribed OTC medications over the counter. The results are published online June 24 in the British Medical Journal.
"If you're looking for a prescription, Nexium is a much better fit for you than Prilosec," Koeppe said. "This shows that a combination of prescription and over-the-counter medications can provide more affordable alternatives for your treatment and can help you feel more confident in managing your health."
The study, published in the British Medical Journal, was part of a research-based study that followed 18,000 adults in more than 100 countries over four years.
The study examined whether prices of the popular OTC drugs, Nexium and Prilosec, compare with those of generic drugs.
It found that the top three OTC drugs at a cost of $1,000 to $1,800, and the lowest prices for any of the top three were Prilosec and Nexium. The study also found that Prilosec and Nexium are similarly effective for treating GERD. The price difference between these drugs is not as great as that found in the study, but it's worth noting that both are available on prescription.

"For one, we were looking at the medication that is sold in the pharmacy, Prilosec and Nexium. We looked at their cost and effectiveness. It looked at how much the patient was taking the medication, the dosage and the number of prescriptions they had written," Sivaraswamy said.
The results showed that both drugs are comparable in price.
Sivaraswamy and her team found that the average price of Prilosec is $600, while the price of Nexium is $600 for 30 tablets, she said.
The price difference between these drugs is also higher, she said.
"Prilosec and Nexium are both available on prescription, so the price difference is higher because the patient is paying more for a medication and a prescription is needed. And the price difference between these two medications is also higher because they are available in the pharmacy," she said.

"The fact that both medications are also similar is exciting news for all of us," she said.
Sivaraswamy also said that both Prilosec and Nexium are available on prescription, and that they should be on the same strength. The cost of Prilosec and Nexium is $200 to $400 and $400 to $500, respectively.
